Water allocation planning for the Hills and Fleurieu
Water Allocation Plans ensure our region’s water is shared fairly and used sustainably. These legally established plans set the rules for how much water can be taken, who can use it, and how it can be traded or transferred.
Based on scientific research of water resources and combined with extensive community consultation and participation, water allocation plans help protect vital water resources while supporting farming, businesses, and the environment. Water users can apply for licenses and manage their water use within set limits.
Water Allocation Plans are reviewed every 10 years to ensure they are still meeting the needs of the environment and community.
There are three Water Allocation Plans in the Hills and Fleurieu that set out the rules for managing our water resources.
Updating the Mount Lofty Ranges Water Allocation Plans
The water allocation plans for the Mount Lofty Ranges are now being revised. Find out what’s changing, how the process works, and how you can have your say.
The review of the Eastern and Western Mount Lofty Ranges Water Allocation Plans
Originally adopted in 2013, the plans were reviewed in 2022–24 and found to need significant amendment to respond to climate change, overallocation and declining water-dependent ecosystems.
The process to amend these plans began in 2025 and is expected to continue through to 2029, resulting in updated Water Allocation Plans for both regions.
