Bushfire recovery support and resources now available for land managers affected by the Deep Creek and Nangkita fires.
Managing carbon on your farm
Carbon farming is about adopting agricultural practices that actively manage carbon, to ensure that cycling carbon is captured and maximised on our land.
When done right, the result is a win for the environment, as well as a win for production.
Here are some ways you can put carbon farming into practice on your farm:
- Maintain groundcover by reducing cultivation and keeping stubble.
- Meet plant nutrition needs to support healthy growth.
- Encourage dung beetles to recycle nutrients and improve soil.
- Use grazing and precision farming to protect soil structure.
- Apply the right fertiliser at the right rate, time, and place.
- Match fertiliser use to crop and pasture needs to reduce waste.
- Manage grazing carefully to protect pasture and soil.
- Include legumes and choose pasture species suited to your farm.
- Improve livestock diets to make the most of pasture growth.
- Improve reproductive rates and reduce mortality.
- Increase growth rates and enhance livestock genetics.
- Use feed additives to reduce methane emissions.
- Maintain pumps, machinery, buildings, and facilities for efficiency.
- Adopt renewable energy where possible.
- Implement energy-saving practices across the farm.
- Protect existing vegetation and plant more to increase carbon storage.
- Use vegetation strategically to improve biodiversity and soil health.
