Tackling Illegal Dams in the Mount Lofty Ranges
Illegal dams are putting water security and ecosystems at risk. High-resolution imagery has revealed hundreds of illegal dams and enlargements built since a moratorium was introduced in 2013 to prevent the activity in the Mount Lofty Ranges.
These structures reduce water for legitimate users and threaten species like the southern pygmy perch and mountain galaxias. With climate change driving drier conditions, fair water management is critical.
Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu is:
Educating land managers about legal responsibilities
Removing illegal dams to restore water flow
Using satellite technology to detect changes faster
If you’re planning work on a dam or watercourse, you must have development approval or a water affecting activity permit. Most landholders are doing the right thing, and we’re here to help others comply.
