Did you know there are native freshwater algae species that are good for our dams and waterways?
Recently, Stewardship Officers collected an algae sample from a local dam in Macclesfield and submitted it to the State Herbarium at the Botanic Garden for expert identification by Michelle Casanova.
What Michelle found was an interesting underwater plant-like species - Chara preissii, a native freshwater algae that is often mistaken for a weed, as it looks like a submerged plant. Chara preissii plays an important role in keeping farm dams and freshwater systems healthy by:
Improving water clarity
Providing habitat for aquatic life
Helping stabilise sediments
Supporting a balanced ecosystem
Because it can resemble a weed at first glance, be mindful before removing aquatic vegetation from your dam. Not everything green underwater is a problem - some species are working hard to keep your water healthy.
